Life of Duty // Smokejumpers

A documentary we filmed for Life of Duty TV. Smokejumping was developed in the late 1930s era as a means to quickly reach fires in remote road-less areas for initial attack. The primary mission of a smoke jumper is fighting fire. Along with parachuting, smoke jumpers may be delivered to fires via helicopter, by vehicle or on foot.

We had the opportunity to meet and interview a handful of these heroes, including Jason Ramos.

The North Cascades Smokejumpers base is located about 2 hours north of Wenatchee, Washington.

We got to use the GoPro cameras in a couple of fun places as well.

It’s like this helicopter had a mount specifically for the GoPro.

This was really a fun project for us. It was something that began about 18 months prior when we began to look at how we were using our Same Day Wedding edits to tell stories. We realized there was no reason we couldn’t do the same thing for Oregon Football – telling the story not of just the football game, but of everything part of the experience of Autzen Stadium. So we took aim at capturing the Civil War versus Oregon State – one of the longest rivalry games in college football.

We spent countless hours in pre-production, planning for everything we could. We knew the day would unfold before us, but we did everything we could to make sure we were in the right spot at the right time. We spent the following day editing, and had it online just under 48 hours after the game was over. The video has received over 31k view on GoDucks.com YouTube page and almost 11k on our Vimeo page.

It was an extremely fun project with a great team of people.

For this project we used the following equipment: Canon 5D, Canon 7D, Canon 60D / Glidecam HD 4000 / DP Slider / GoPro HD Cameras / Manfrotto Monopods

Life of Duty // Interceptors: Battle at the Arizona-Mexico Border

We had the very eye-opening experience of hanging with Arizona’s Pinal County sheriff department in September. It was unbelievable to see how unsecured our borders are at that juncture. The first night we were out with them on patrol, they intercepted 3 mexican “packers,” each hauling over 80 pounds of marijuana on their backs. One of them was a 14-year-old boy.

The 2nd day we were there, we got to film a SWAT take down of a cartel member in suburban Phoenix.

This is a truck load of the packages of marijuana the ‘packers’ carry on their back – each weighing over 60 pounds – across the border headed for metropolitan Phoenix.

On the last morning, there was an officer-involved shooting near an interstate. It was amazing to see the full law-enforcement force thrown into action so quickly.

As part of the show, Life of Duty, we were able to film portions of this documentary which tells the tale of Chuck Mawhinney, the most successful sniper in US Marine Corps history.

Thousands of miles from home, tasked with the job of saving the lives of his fellow Marines, Chuck Mawhinney recounts both the physical and mental grit it took to kill and not get killed in the jungles of Vietnam.
